Representatives of different political parties in the district and organizations working in the conservation sector underlined the need for taking effective measures for protecting the red panda, an endangered species of wildlife.[break]
The program was organized under the joint aegis of the Mountain Conservation Forum, Taplejung, the Red Panda Network, WWF, the District Development Committee (DDC) and the District Forestry Office.
The rare red panda is found only in Nepal, India, China, Bhutan and Burma. This animal is found in forests at an altitude ranging from 2,200 -4,800 metres from the sea level.
According to wildlife experts the red panda population in Nepal is around 400.
An inter-secondary school level essay writing competition on the topic of protection of the red panda and eco-tourism was organized on the occasion.
A documentary on the red panda was also screened as part of marking the Day.
