Save Everest team collects 5 tons of garbage

KATHMANDU, May 24: Carlsberg team that has been supporting a campaign to free collect garbage from the Everest region has so far helped collect approximately five tons of garbage left by trekkers and mountaineers along the trekking trail and slopes of Mt Everest.



“The team so far has collected about five tons of garbage from areas South Col (7,920m) and South Summit (8,750m),” reads a press statement issued by the Carlsberg Group.[break]



The garbage includes abandoned oxygen cylinders, old tents and ropes among others, reads the statement, adding that the team is progressively collecting the garbage amidst harsh weather conditions.



The campaign - Saving Everest 2011 - has been organized by Everest Summiteers Association Nepal in association with Eco Himal. Carlsberg is the main supporter of the campaign.



Carlsberg team comprises of representatives from Carlsberg Group, Denmark; Carlsberg Malaysia, Carlsberg Singapore, Carlsberg Hong Kong, Carlsberg India and Gorkha Brewery.



“Carlsberg´s global initiative to clean up the Everest is a step toward doing the right thing and Carlsberg believes that the consumers will connect with the cause and see it as their own contribution toward doing the right thing,” the company said in the statement.
