PALANCHOWK, Kavre, May 12: Popularly known as 'Sathi Ghar' in Kavre district, the village today remains in name only as the earthquake of April 25 and the subsequent aftershocks destroyed all 60 houses of the small village.

The 60 households situated between Kalika Temple and the main road added beauty to the Palanchok hills before their destruction. The temple worshipping the Goddess Kali, however, survived the quake and remains intact. The hill, known as 'Shaktipeeth', holy place of the Goddess, is a pilgrimage site for many.

The houses that once stood there have been turned to rubble by the massive earthquake. Buildings were destroyed in such a way that people are unable to identify their plots of land underneath, according to one of the victims.

A total of 12 people, out of 58 reported fatalities in Panchkhal municipality, are from this settlement, according to Dilip Khatiwada, in-charge of local area police office (APO).

As per the record maintained at district police office (DPO), Kavre, the death toll caused by the earthquake and aftershocks has now reached 320 in Kavre district as of Monday, SP Puja Singh told Republica.

While the legal name of the community was Panchkhal, it was affectionately known as Sathi Ghar by locals and even after the village was merged into Panchkal municipality recently, the nickname stuck.

Survivors of the village have received some food items as relief materials on Monday, nine day after the deadly disaster. According to the survivors, none of the agency has taken any steps to improve their lives.

According to locals, most bodies of the dead remain in the rubble. Survivors are also still waiting to reclaim whatever they can.

Meanwhile, Chief District Officer (CDO) Sudarshan Dhakal expressed his dissatisfactions over the government's decision to label Kavre district with 'Kha' category to grade the level of damage in the district.

"There are more losses in the district than the government realises," said CDO Dhakal. He further complained that insufficient quantities of relief materials have arrived in the district.
