According to Dinesh Ghimire, the chief district officer of Sarlahi, a police team has been deployed to arrest the Indian contractor, who has fled the work site without completing the work within the set deadline. The contractor has also left behind construction equipment and machinery. [break]
The Postal Highway is being constructed with support from the Indian government. Indian firm Vishwa Construction, had won the contract of the road section, which was to be completed by October 29. The road section´s construction was formally initiated on April 26, 2011 by organizing a function in the presence of the then Indian ambassador to Nepal, Jyanta Prasad.
"Police are searching for the Indian contractor and the other officials involved in the project. Their lack of seriousness has imposed a huge burden and challenge pm is to fix the problem before the upcoming election date," said Ghimire.
As per the previous agreement, the Indian construction company was supposed to blacktop the 26.6 km section by this time around but work is under way in just a 5 km section, informed DAO.
According to a source, if the Indian contractor will have to bear extra expenses if it resumes the work. "This is the main reason why the contractor has fled without informing the authorities," said the source.
Meanwhile, the locals are forced to use to poor road full of puddles.
"Traveling becomes a painful experience especially during the monsoon. We have to wait for hours to reach our destination because the vehicle get stuck in puddles most of the time," said a local. "The plight is similarly disturbing during the summer as clouds of dusts makes it impossible to walk through the road section" added the local.
