KATHMANDU, Jan 13: Sandeep Lamichhane, the former captain of Nepal’s national cricket team, who was accused of raping a minor, was released on bail from the central jail on Friday.

Lamichhane, who spent 70 days in jail, was released on bail on Friday after the Patan High Court ordered his release from prison on a bail amount of Rs 2 million.

On September 6, a 17-year-old girl lodged a complaint at the Gaushala Police Station, accusing Lamichhane of raping her in a hotel room. Lamichhane surrendered to the police on October 6. He has been denying the allegations leveled against him.

Lamichhane filed an application at the Patan High Court against the order given by the Kathmandu District Court on November 4 to keep him in custody until the final decision on the minor rape case.

After hearing the same petition, the high court ordered his conditional release on bail. Following the court’s order, Lamichhane was released on Friday. Similarly, Saroj Krishna Ghimire, Sandeep Lamichhane's lawyer, has said that Lamichhane should be given the captaincy of the national cricket team again as he has been released from jail.
