KATHMANDU, Sept 10: The South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) has decided to introduce club championship and U-19 championship as new tournaments.

An executive committee meeting of the SAFF held in Kathmandu on Tuesday took the decision. "We have decided to organize SAFF Club Championship. We´ll send a proposal to our marketing partner World Sports Group and will wait two months for their response. If they do not come up with a positive response, we´ll independently approach possible sponsors," said Alberto Colaco, the general secretary of the regional federation.[break]

"If we get sponsors on time, August 2014 would be the nearest possible date for hosting the tournament," he added. However, Colaco said that the SAFF is yet to decide whether the club championship would be an annual or a bi-annual event. "The tournament will have the same format as the SAFF Championship and the prize money and other arrangements will also be the same," he said.

According to Colaco, the SAFF U-19 Championship will be organized from 2015 as a bi-annual event.

Colaco said the SAFF has come a long way from the time when it used to organize only one tournament.

The federation has been organizing the SAFF Championship, SAFF Women´s Championship and the SAFF U-16 Championship.

According to Colaco, the SAFF Women´s Championship will be held in Pakistan in October and November of 2014.

Meanwhile, the SAFF Championship 2015 will be held in India. "As per our contract with the WSG, every alternative SAFF Championship will be organized in India. The host city will be decided by a meeting between the India FA, WSG and SAFF representatives," said Colaco.

The federation has decided to amend its statute before the electoral congress. "There were suggestions that we need to amend our statute to increase the profile of SAFF. It will take four to six months to complete all the amendments, and then we´ll decide the date for the electoral congress," said Colaco.
