During the talks held on Sunday in the capital, the government assured the leader of the party that the Constituent Assembly (CA) polls would be held by the third week of November. [break]
“The government has also agreed to proceed with forming a commission on delineating electoral constituencies before the CA polls,” SP General Secretary Manish Kumar Suman told Republica. He said the government has also agreed to address their other demands.
Following the talks with the government, SP Chairman and former minister Rajendra Mahato broke his hunger strike on Sunday evening.
Accusing the government of being indifferent to their demands, Mahato on Tuesday had launched a fast-unto-death at Shanti Batika in the capital.
SP, among other things, has demanded announcement of the election date and delineation of electoral constituencies before the CA polls.
The Madhes-based party has also demanded that cases against leaders and cadres of the armed outfits that are in talks with the government also be withdrawn. SP has maintained that withdrawal of such cases will pave the way for the armed outfits to peacefully participate in the fresh CA election.
The party has also stressed on amending the existing directive related to citizenship distribution so that citizenships may also be issued on the basis of mother´s nationality.
Similarly, SP has demanded that farmers be given subsidies while buying chemical fertilizers, seeds and agricultural equipment. The party had been staging protests across Madhes for the last 19 days.
