SAARC, BIMSTEC ministerial meeting on poverty in Nepal

KATHMANDU, Aug 26: Nepal has proposed South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) and Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) to hold ministerial level meetings on poverty alleviation in Nepal.



While the SAARC ministerial meeting on poverty alleviation has been scheduled to be held in Nepal on October 23 this year, it has also pushed to host similar ministerial meeting of BIMSTEC, a block of five South Asian and two East Asian countries, on January 16, 2012.[break]



The first meeting of the steering committee for the preparation of BIMSTEC and SAARC ministerial meeting on poverty alleviation held on August 22 at National Planning Commission (NPC) secretariat had proposed the dates for the meetings.



The proposed SAARC level ministerial meeting on poverty alleviation is third in the series, while BIMSTEC´s is second in its series.



The dates have been sent to SAARC and BIMSTEC member countries and will be fixed according to their consensus. According to NPC, senior officers from both SAARC and BIMSTEC countries will meet a day before the ministerial meeting.
