KATHMANDU, Jan 8: Nepali rupee lost 99 paisa against US dollar this week as the Indian currency, with which rupee is pegged, lost value against the greenback. Gold price, on the other hand, went up by Rs 2,000 per tola (11.664 grams) over the week.
CURRENCY
Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB), the central regulatory authority, opened currency trading on Sunday with value of US dollar fixed at Rs 106.28.Rupee gained 16 paisa against US dollar on Monday to settle at 106.12. The local currency, however, lost 64 paisa on Tuesday to close at 106.76 against the greenback. On Wednesday, the local currency made some recovery, gaining 16 paisa against US dollar to settle at 106.92.
According to Press Trust of India ( PTI), Indian rupee once again turned shaky against the US dollar and closed at 66.82 on Wednesday, its lowest level in more than two-weeks, on the back of frantic demand for the American currency. "Sustained capital outflows against the backdrop of sliding equities and buoyant dollar overseas largely impacted trading sentiment," reports PTI.
Rupee lost 31 paisa on Thursday to 107.23 against US dollar. The local unit lost another 4 paisa against the greenback on Friday to close the week's trading at 107.27.
Rupee also lost Rs 1.17 against euro, while it gained 13 paisa against Pound Sterling over the week. A euro was exchanged at Rs 116.59 on Friday, while the Pound Sterling was valued Rs 156.62.
BULLION
Gold price went up by Rs 2,000 per tola this week.
Trading opened on Sunday with price of gold fixed at Rs 47,800 per tola. Gold price increased by Rs 200 per tola to Rs 48,000 on Monday. On Tuesday also, gold price went up by Rs 500 per tola to close at Rs 48,500. Price of the yellow metal increased by another Rs 400 per tola on Wednesday to Rs 48,900. Gold continued its gaining streak on Thursday as well, as its price went up by Rs 800 per tola to Rs 49,700. On Friday also, price of gold surged by Rs 100 per tola to close the week's trading at Rs 49,800.
Meanwhile, price of silver remained unchanged over the week. On Friday, silver was traded at Rs 675 per tola.
