Rumor of fire causes 12 deaths in train mishap

The rumor prompted someone to pull the train’s emergency chain, causing panicked passengers to jump off the moving train.

KATHMANDU, Jan 23: The death toll in a train accident in Jalgaon, Maharashtra of India, has reached 12. An estimated 40 people have been injured in the accident.


The Pushpak Express was making its regular journey between Lucknow and Mumbai. A rumor began to circulate among the passengers that a fire had broken out when smoke emitted from the wheels after the brakes were applied at Padhade railway station. This rumor prompted someone to pull the train’s emergency chain, causing panicked passengers to jump off the moving train.

According to Indian media, the passengers jumped off the train and sat on the other track when the Karnataka Express hurtling towards them, crushed them.


The Pushpak Express was going from Lucknow to Mumbai, while the Karnataka Express was heading to Delhi from Mumbai. According to the report, smoke came out of the wheels when the Pushpak Express applied brakes. The track at the scene of the accident was on a sharp bend. Due to this, the passengers did not even realize that another train was hurtling towards them.
