Ruling MPRF-D shuts down Janakpur

JANAKPUR, March 4: After police arrested 11 cadres of the ruling Madeshi Janadhikar Forum-Democratic following an altercation between the cadres and the local development officer (LDO) of Dhanusha, the party has announced an indefinite shutdown in Janankpur starting Monday. The party´s chairman Bijaya Kumar Gachchhadar is a deputy prime minister.



Police had arrested the cadres Sunday after they got into a fracas with the LDO over the issue of salary payments by the LDO office to some of its suspended staffers. Although all the arrested cadres were released on Sunday evening the party called the strike demanding action against LDO Taranath Adhikari.[break]



Also, the party has put forth an 11-point demand with the government in connection with protecting trust [Guthi] land and Janakpur town development. The party has also demanded renovation of the temples and lakes in Janakpur.



Life in the district was affected by the shutdown on Monday. All educational institutions and some government offices remained close. The only railway service in the country was shut due to the strike. The party also took out a protest demonstration in Janakpur in the afternoon. The 19th council meeting of the District Development Office, Dhanusha was also called off Monday due to the strike.
