KATHMANDU, Aug 20: Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Chair Rabi Lamichhane has questioned what other state agencies would do if the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) were to oversee the private sector as well.
Speaking at the State Affairs and Good Governance Committee meeting on Thursday, Lamichhane stressed the need to maintain the credibility of state institutions. “You cannot say the court and the CIAA belong to a party. The credibility of institutions must be protected,” he said, adding that individual cases could be debated.

Lamichhane said interpretations of policy decisions should be clearly defined through legislation. He also stressed the need to boost private-sector confidence amid the struggling economy. “The private sector’s morale needs to be boosted. The economy is faltering,” he said, urging the authorities to ensure there would be no political interference.
Lamichhane also questioned how the state could address cases involving people who allegedly embezzle money and conceal evidence after serving for some time at the CIAA.
On constitutional amendment, he said the current composition of the House of Representatives does not provide sufficient numbers for a two-thirds majority required to amend the Constitution. “The current constitutional provisions should be followed and maximum reforms should be made,” he said.
