KATHMANDU, Sept 4: The ongoing unification talks between former royalist parties -- Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), Rastriya Janashakti Party (RJP) and Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal (RPP-N) -- has broken after the Kamal Thapa-led RPP-N refused to accept proposals put forth by the other two parties.

The talks fell apart after RJP and RPP proposed that RPP-N cannot go against the provision set in interim constitution on the issue of monarchy. [break]

According to a RJP leader, RPP-N has decided to stay away from the unification meetings after RJP and RPP said that they can take a proposal on issues related to monarchy and secularism, as per the provision set in the Interim Constitution 2007, in the upcoming unity general convention.

“RPP-N boycotted the talks after a proposal to take these issues in the unity convention was endorsed by a majority,” the leader said on the condition of anonymity.

Among other things, the RPP-N has been rooting for the revival of monarchy and declaring Nepal a Hindu state again.

Chairman Kamal Thapa and another leader Rajib Parajuli of the RPP-N has been taking part in the unification talks that began from August 14.

While Chairman Surya Bahadur Thapa and Co-Chair Dr Prakash Chandra Lohani participated in the talks on behalf of the RJP, Chairman Pashupati SJB Rana and Thakur Sharma represented the RPP.

Despite the RPP-N boycott, the RJP leaders said the talks between the parties for forging an alliance for the upcoming election would go on. “We will again hold talks. The alliance in the upcoming election is very much likely,” the leader further said.
