Officials of DRI with the support of District Police Office, Kavre took under its control 13 containers on Friday and another 9 containers on Saturday from places along the Arniko Highway including Panchkhal and Dhulikhel.
"We took the containers under control after we were informed that they were carrying illegally imported goods from China," Janmajaya Regmi, director general of DRI, said.
Officials say this might be the largest consignment of smuggled goods seized by the department of the past five years. In 2007, revenue officials had taken nine containers under their control on suspicion of evading revenue worth Rs 3.2 million.
Meanwhile, DRI on Sunday assigned five groups of revenue officers to investigate into the case. "We will be in a position to give further details about the containers and the goods they are carrying only on Monday,” said Regmi. He further added that investigation teams were studying the documents to verify the customs declaration forms and other related documents confiscated along with the containers.
Geeta Upreti, chief of District Police Office, Kavre, said the containers were mainly carrying readymade garments and clothing accessories.
