On the occasion, Sharma highlighted major achievements achieved so far after the declaration of Nepal as a republic and also touched upon new developments in Nepal-US ties. The reception was held at Holiday Inn Georgetown in Washington DC
Sharma hailed US assistance for development of Nepal in a diverse range of areas, including health, infrastructure, education and humanitarian crisis.
He also described the formation of Nepal caucus in the US House of Representative, resumption of US Peace Corps in Nepal, signing of Trade and Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA), selection of Nepal as threshold country for Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), among other things, as significant achievements.
Speaking on the occasion, the chief guest Robert O. Blake, Assistant Secretary of State, South Asia and Central Asia of the State Department expressed his best wishes to Nepal. He outlined that Nepal has most enthusiastic cadres of support in the US such as the returned Peace Corps volunteers or other Americans who have had wonderful experience of one sort or other in Nepal. He also expressed happiness over the resumption of Peace Corps last year in the country.
Deputy Secretary of State of Maryland, Rajan R. Natarajan, senior officials from the State Department, White House, Capitol Hill, Peace Crops, United States Trade Representatives, Millennium Challenge Corporation, ambassadors and representatives of diplomatic community in Washington DC and large number of Nepalese diaspora community residing in the greater Washington DC area, were also present in the function.
