KATHMANDU, May 29: The Republic Day is being observed across the country today.
However, most of the events are limited to virtual and informal ones as prohibitory orders have been issued in most parts of the country to stem the spread of the second wave of COVID-19.
Republic Day to be celebrated for three days
The day-- Jetha 15 in the Lunar Calendar-- is commemorated as Republic Day as the first meeting of the Constituent Assembly abolished the 240-year-old institution of monarchy and declared the country a republic on this day in 2065 BS.
On May 28, 2008, the country abolished the monarchy to pave the way to establish a democratic republic. The transformation was codified in the Constitution promulgated by the second Constituent Assembly on September 20, 2015.
