KATHMANDU, Feb 1: The Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Democratic and Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Nationalist have forged an alliance today. The RPP (D) is led by Pashupati Shumsher JBR while the RPP (N) by Prakash Chandra Lohani.

The two parties had announced their unification of Friday. The unified party would be called Rastriya Prajatantra Party (Samyukta). The unified party will have ‘plough’ as its election symbol.

Earlier, in November 2018, the unification between three RPPs (including the RPP led by Kamal Thapa) was foiled following differences over the unified party’s election symbol and political stand over the issue of monarchy. Then, Rana, had proposed 'plow' as an election symbol and declined to adopt constitutional monarchy as the new political line.

However, according to the agreement between RPP (D) and RPP (N), the two parties have agreed to call for the reinstatement of a Hindu nation along with a democratic system of governance inclusive of the institution of monarchy.

Lohani and Rana had formed separate parties splitting from the RPP, less than a year after a merger between the two parties led by Thapa and Rana in 2016. But following a humiliating defeat in the provincial and parliamentary elections held last year, the three parties had initiated reunification talks, vowing to conclude it by November.
