KATHMANDU, June 4: Chairman of the interim election government Khil Raj Regmi has said the government will forward the ordinance on election laws and announce poll date on its own if the major political parties failed to reach an agreement over the matter by Friday.

Regmi said so at a meeting with CPN-UML leaders at the prime minister’s office in Singha Durbar on Monday. UML Chairman Jhalanath Khanal, who also heads the High Level Political Committee (HLPC) at present, and other UML leaders including Madhav Kumar Nepal, KP Sharma Oli and Bidya Bhandari had called on Regmi to inform him about inter-party discussions being held at the HLPC. “Chairman Regmi drew the attention of HLPC Coordinator Khanal toward the possibility of a situation that may compel him to take a meaningful and appropriate decision, bearing in mind the discussions he had earlier with various political parties, in case the major parties fail to reach any conclusion by Friday,” said a statement issued by Regmi’s Press Advisor Bimal Gautam on Monday.

Stating that the government wanted to settle the issues related to the ordinance on election laws and announce poll date urgently, Regmi urged HLPC Coordinator Khanal to take serious initiatives to reach a conclusion by Friday.

“Because it will be against people’s aspirations and need of the time to cause further delay in reaching a concrete conclusion, the government can’t wait any longer,” the statement quoted Regmi as saying during the meeting with UML leaders.
