RCC door, window frames replacing wooden frames

By
BARDAGHAT (Nawalparasi), June 24: Customers reeling under rising timber prices can take a sigh of relief as RCC door and window frames -- possibly the best alternative to wooden frames -- are now available at lower prices.

Dozens of firms across the country are involved in production of concrete frames. [break]These frames are made by pouring concrete mix over reinforced steel into a mold as per the required size and design. These frames are available at almost half the price of wooden frames.

Daunnedevi Tile and Block Udhyog in Bardaghat, Nawalparasi is one of the leading suppliers of RCC frames. Tika Ram Bhandari, proprietor of the company, said the industry has been selling its products in Nawalparasi and Butwal. Bhandari had started the factory last year.

According to Bhandari, RCC single-frame RCC door frames cost Rs 2,300 while window frames are available at Rs 3,600. Wooden door and window frames of the same size cost Rs 4,500 and Rs 6,000 respectively.

“Demand for RCC door and window frames is increasing as they are available at far cheaper price compared to wooden frames,” Bhandari said, “Buoyed by the market demand, I am planning to expand the business in the capital.”

RCC frames are getting popular not only because of the price factor. Bhandari said these frames are mites-resistant and environment friendly.

Lumbini Block Udhyog at Kawasoti of Nawalparasi also started manufacturing RCC frames from last year. Shiva Giri, proprietor of the factory, said he has already sold about 80 frames.

“Earlier, I sued to make only the blocks. Now, I have started producing RCC frames to cater to growing demand for such frames in the market,” added Giri.

In a bid to bring down house construction cost and discourage use of timber in construction sector, Sustainable Construction Practice (SCP) project of Federation of Nepal Cottage and Small Industries with the support of European Union has been providing technical support to such entrepreneurs.

Chudamani Bhattarai, chief of the Chitwan-based office of the project, said they have been providing technical support to the entrepreneurs to promote sustainable and environment-friendly development.
