LAHAN, Siraha, June 18: At a time when any two political parties are having hard time agreeing on any given issue, the 10* political parties, including four major parties, have stuck a rare consensus in Saptari.

They have joined hands to pile pressure on the release of the three arrested for beating up Devidatta Sah, the campus chief of Mahendra Bindeshwari Campus, Rajbiraj, last week. [break]

The political parties, including, Nepali Congress, CPN-UML, CPN-Maoist, Madhesi People´s Rights Forum (MPRF), Sadbhawana Party and others on Wednesday decided to padlock district administration office to press it to release the accused. However, Nepali Congress´ Saptari district president Ram Kumar Chaudhari differed, saying such a pressure to get the accused released was wrong. The NC as a party is in favor of pressurizing the dictrict administration, though.

The parties have demanded release of Free Student Union (FSU) President Ramchandra Yadav and co-accused Prakash Yadav and Santosh Yadav, while a case is subjudice in Saptari district court against the trio.

Maoist Mithila State Committee member Dev Nath Yadav said that the meeting decided to padlock district administration office at 11 am on Thursday.

Joint coordinator of MPRF in Saptari Shailendra Sah said the students should be punished as per the offense they have committed. “But since they are charged of kidnapping, we had to protest it as it involves the future of the students,” Sah said.

NC Saptari district President Chaudhari said the guilty must be brought to book and said his party will respect the court´s verdict. Chaudhari stressed on a high-level investigation since the CDO was also involved in the incident. “The incident is condemnable. The case is in the court and the court will decide,” he added.

Meanwhile, CDO Ram Bilas Ray denied having any knowledge about the case except that the case is subjudice in the court.

Saptari District Police Chief Bhupal Bhandari has taken leave in the wake of mounting pressure to release the arrested.

Earlier, an all-party meet initiative by the CDO on Tuesday to reopen the campus ended inconclusively as the NC boycotted the meeting.

Campus chief Sah´s take

Ten parties have demanded withdrawal of the case? What is your say on this?

That is their decision. But I am seeking justice. I am optimistic that the court will ultimately give me justice. Let us see what happens as the court has not yet delivered its verdict. It is shameful on the part of political parties running the country to cover up this infamous incident. Political parties should not promote impunity in this way.

Had you ever thought that the incident like this would take place in a rule of law?

I was beaten up for four hour in front of law enforcers i.e. police. This is the height of impunity. Question will arise whether there is state in the country if the culprits of this incident are released.

What kind of effect will this incident leave on educational sector?

It will set a precedent of anarchy in academic sector if the teachers started getting torture in gift from the students. This is probably the first cruel incident in the entire academic sector in a democracy and rule of law.
