SAPTARI, Sept 16: An adolescent rape victim in Saptari district committed suicide on Tuesday after failing to get justice. The victim has been identified as a 17-year old girl from Dakneswori Municipality-7 in the district.

According to the District Police Office, Saptari, the adolescent girl committed suicide after villagers obstructed her from registering a case against the rapist. The victim family was reportedly put under pressure to seek compensation from the accused persons instead of filing a case with the police.

Sources close to the victim’s family said she was gang-raped by four individuals on Monday morning. A meeting of local level leaders had barred the girl from filing the case against the rapist, asking the victim’s family to seek compensation instead. 

A team of police personnel from the District Police Office, Saptari, has been sent to the village for further investigation into the case. The rape accused have already been arrested from the village. 

Police said the dead body of the victim has been taken to BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKHIS) in Dharan for post mortem.
