KATHMANDU, Jan 5: Fugitive Ramesh Upreti has been arrested in connection with the infamous 33 kg gold smuggling scam. He was arrested shortly after he landed at the Tribhuvan International Airport on an Air Arabia flight from Dubai at 3:30 PM on Tuesday, police said. Ramesh, brother of Chudamani Upreti ‘Gore’, the main accused in the 33 kg gold smuggling case, had been absconding for a long time.
He had been living in Dubai after 33 kg of gold went missing from Urlabari Municipality-7 of Morang. “The search for the fugitives has started after the accused arrested in the 33 kg gold smuggling case were released on bail,” police sources said. “Security at the Tribhuvan International Airport was tightened after receiving information that fugitive accused Ramesh, who had been living in Dubai, was returning.”

Police are conducting further investigation on him who is currently in police custody in Gaushala. Gorey, the main accused in the 33 kg gold and Sanam Shakya murder case, and six others are currently serving life sentences. The district court in Morang had sentenced Gorey, Tekraj Malla Thakuri, Lakpa Sherpa, Mohan Kafle, Narendra Karki and Bhojraj Bhandari to life imprisonment, Rajan Kumar to three years and Madan Prasad Ghimire to six months imprisonment.
The Morang Police had filed an indictment in the District Court of Morang on May 2, 2018 against 77 people including Gore, the main accused in the incident.
