A group of unidentified people indiscriminately opened fire at the meeting venue. Shyam Yadav, 30, Rajendra Yadav, 55, Suresh Yadav, 40 and Shri Prasad Yadav, 60, have also been injured in the shooting. The assailants had also attacked the locals with khukuris.
Shyam and Rajendra have been referred to BP Koirala Institute of Health Science (BPKIHS), Dharan, for further treatment. Suresh and Shri Prasad have been admitted to Janakpur Zonal Hospital.
The meeting was called by Yadav, who is also a district committee member of Madheshi People´s Rights Forum (MPRF), to resolve a dispute with one Lila Nath Yadav over filling a local pond.
A Panchayat, a traditional meeting of local people organized for resolving disputes, was called for Wednesday. Yadav was attacked while consulting his relatives and neighbors to present his case before the panchayat.
A pall of gloom has descended in Yadav´s neighborhood following his murder. On the other hand, Lila Nath has fled the village following the incident.
The police have recovered seven shells of bullets from the incident site. Police inspector Govinda Puri says that at least three people might have simultaneously opened fire at Yadav and his neighbors.
Although police is clueless about the attackers, locals say it was one Hare Shiva Yadav who led the group of attackers to open fire.
Hare Shiva, 33, who is believed to have attacked Yadav, is a former policeman. He was dismissed from service after he was found involved in a robbery.
Later, Hare Shiva was arrested with illegal arms. He was sent to judicial custody. But he walked out of the custody following an appellate court order. After being freed from custody, he went underground and started introducing himself as Pawan Madheshi.
Two months ago, the police had raided Hare Shiva´s house and had recovered a revolver, bullets and socket bombs. Hare Shiva´s brother Aajad, who was arrested during the raid, told the police that all the seized arms and ammunition were collected by Hare Shiva.
