KATHMANDU, Oct 6: On Thursday night, tremors of two earthquakes were felt in Chainpur of Bajhang district, according to the National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Center.

The first quake, measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale, struck at 10:52 PM with its epicenter located in Chainpur, Bajhang. Subsequently, another quake with a magnitude of 3.9 and its epicenter in Chainpur occurred at 12:23 AM.

These recent seismic activities follow a notable earthquake event that took place last Tuesday at 2:40 PM, when a 5.3 magnitude earthquake with its epicenter in Talkot, Bajhang, was recorded. On the same day, four consecutive earthquakes occurred, including a 6.3 magnitude earthquake with its epicenter in Chainpur at 3:06 PM, a 4.1 magnitude quake at 3:13 PM, and another 4.1 magnitude earthquake with its epicenter in Surma at 3:45 PM. One person was killed and dozens of individuals sustained injuries in the quakes.

According to Dr Lok Bijay Adhikari, a geologist at the Center, the Thursday night earthquakes are considered aftershocks of the earthquake that struck Bajhang on Tuesday. He highlighted that West Nepal had not experienced significant earthquakes for approximately 500 years, and these recent events signify a resurgence of seismic activities in the region. Dr Adhikari emphasized that Nepal remains vulnerable to earthquakes because it is situated in an earthquake-prone zone, and the risk of earthquakes occurring at any time is a constant concern.

Earthquakes continue to be prevalent in Nepal's eastern and western mountainous regions. These areas are recognized as earthquake-prone regions, underscoring the importance of preparedness and vigilance in the face of seismic hazards.
