He built a temporary shelter near his destroyed house for his six- member family. Tamang and his family had been living in the makeshift shade for the last one and half months when heavy rainfall caused the entire village land to subside by about a foot, forcing Tamang and other villagers from their original place. "We are forced to leave our land and shelter," complained Tamang, a father of four.Deprived of any source of livelihood, Tamang and his wife decided to migrate to Kathmandu, where they hoped to work as laborer. He got a job at a construction site and started working 12-hours a day. Despite all the hard work, he struggled to make ends meet for his six-member family in the capital.
The ongoing economic blockade imposed by India on Nepal has hit people like Tamang hard. They are on the verge of losing their jobs as the blockade has slowed all the construction works.
"I struggled for over a month here hoping that things would improve over time, but now it seems elusive," he complained. Tamang, who is preparing to return to his village with his family, said that the ongoing fuel crisis was the main reason why he decided to leave the capital. "I am left with no choice. The contractor has disappeared without even paying my wages. Everything is so expensive here," he complained.
Hundreds of quake victims who had migrated to the capital in search of work have started to return to their respective villages as the Indian blockade exacerbates shortage of fuel and other essential goods.
Tamang informed that many quake victims from his village, who had moved to the capital, have already left and some are preparing to leave.
The shortage of fuel and essential goods have led to multi-faceted crisis, as almost all industries have shut down either due to shortage of raw materials or the inability of staff and workers to get to their workplaces for lack of transport.
People have cut down their diet intake, patients are deprived of basic medication, and health facilities have been running out of emergency drugs. Similarly, students are deprived of compulsory educational activities and developmental works remain obstructed.
