Pun wins Dashain Cup golf

KATHMANDU, Oct 9: Laxman K Pun won the title of the Ruslan Vodka Dashain Cup 2010 golf tournament on Saturday at the Royal Nepal Golf Course, Tilganga.



Pun scored 40 points in the tournament played under the 7/8th Stableford handicap format. Phintso Lama scored 36 points and stood ahead of Niraj SJB Rana in countback to claim the runner-up prize.[break]



Rana won the award for best gross, and also for longest drive.



Sumitra Dayananda scored 34 points to win the ladies´ title. Pushpa Rai was the runner-up in the category with 32 points.



Lil Bahadur Gurung was the winner in the senior category, where Bhim Bahadur Pun was the runner-up.



Meanwhile, Robin Rana won the award for most birdies while Rajendra Shrestha claimed the closest to the pin award. The best sportsmanship award went to Suman Limbu.



Altogether 68 amateur golfers including seven ladies had participated in the tournament.



CHESS: Four players in lead



Uttamraj Thapa of Tanahaun, Ganeshman Duwal of Bhaktapur, Rajendra Prasad Shrestha and Shyam Sundar Shrestha of Kathmandu jointly lead the table with 4.5 points each in the First National Youth of Nation Rating Chess Tournament after the completion of the fifth round on Saturday.



In the fourth and fifth round matches held at Khwapring School, Bhaktapur on Saturday, Thapa defeated Rupesh Jaiswal and shared points with Rajendra Prasad Shrestha.



Duwal defeated Binod Gyawali of Palpa in the fourth round, while in the fifth he was held to a draw by Balaram Napit. Napit had earned full points against Rajendra Prasad Parajuli of Morang in the previous round.



Shyam Sundar Shrestha played a draw with FIDE Master Manish Hamal in the fourth round and then beat Nepal champion Badrilal Nepali. Nepali had lost to Gajendra Prasad Shrestha in the fourth round.



Manish Hamal, Madan Krishna Kayastha, Niraj Niraula, Rajan Puri, Bijay Dangol, Kamal Shrestha and Harichandra Chaulagain are in second position with four points each. Hamal played a draw with Kayastha in the fifth round after a fourth round victory over veteran Lawa Kumar Shrestha.



Herakaji Maharjan, Lawa Kumar Shrestha and Milan Rokka have scored 3.5 points each to secure third position.



ATHLETICS: Dimdong, Khadka win race



Bal Bahadur Dimdong and Gauri Khadka on Saturday won the road race titles in the sports festival organized to mark the 13th anniversary of Buddha Air.



Khadka completed the 3-km race in 19 minutes 58 seconds, while Padma Rayamajhi clocked 23 minutes 43 seconds to claim second position in the women´s section.



Meanwhile, Dimdong clocked 24 minutes 25 seconds to stand ahead of Prem Kumar Tharu in the men´s section.
