As the country celebrates its seventh Loktantra Day, Nepal Republic Media successfully completes its fourth year. Four years ago, on this very occasion, we had launched the Republica and Nagarik daily newspapers.

As per our commitment to offering our readers a variety of choices, we also launched the Sukrabar weekly on a Loktantra-Day eve. We are greatly enthused by the affection, goodwill and trust showered upon us by our invaluable readers in such a short span. And we remain dedicated and committed to our goal of transforming the Nepali people into citizens.[break]

Republica has always raised the voice of the common people with priority. We have left no stone unturned to contribute toward the institutionalization of the democratic system by developing our democratic republic as a way of life for Nepali citizens. This publication has always played a key role in developing and promoting the democratic system, the rule of law and press freedom and in protecting the people´s rights.

The Nepali people´s wish to be governed under a constitution written by their own representatives is yet to be fulfilled. Thousands of Nepalis lost their lives in the decade-long Maoist insurgency, the main goal of which was a Constituent Assembly (CA). There is now a growing feeling that the people´s sacrifices for change during the April Uprising-2006 remain disregarded. The people are disappointed by the way the political parties have been indifferent toward strengthening the democratic system and expediting development work.

It is six years since the advent of Loktantra. Yet, the Nepali people have yet to see political stability and significant strides in development. Even though the country is going through political transition, the political parties and their leaders should have stood by the Nepali people as far as development work was concerned.

The Interim Election Council has now been formed to hold another CA poll.

Though responsible for holding the CA poll by July, it is yet to announce a date for it. The political parties, which are divided among themselves by a huge wall of distrust, have now found a way to regain power through elections to be held by a non-political mechanism. Unless and until the CA polls are conducted, neither will the people be able to use their franchise nor can the political parties regain their lost power and prestige.

On the occasion of the fifth anniversary of Nepal Republic Media, I would like to thank all the editorial, marketing, circulation teams and other staff who have worked tirelessly for bringing out our publications.

I am also grateful to all our readers, who have taken to Republica as their daily source of credible and forward-looking news, analyses and articles. I am likewise thankful to all our advertisers and well-wishers for their valuable contribution in establishing this as a credible newspaper. I trust that similar cooperation will be extended in the days to come.

My best wishes to all Nepali people on this Loktantra Day.
