Trade with the northern neighbor through the largest customs point in the north has come to a grinding halt inflicting daily revenue loss of up to Rs 15 million to the customs office. [break]
The indefinite strike has disrupted security checking of cargoes creating serpentine queue of over 70 containers at the customs yard.
The problem erupted after the Armed Police Force deployed at the customs point confiscated 50,000 Yuan illegally possessed by trader Dawa Lhamu Karki near customs point on Thursday.
Karki, a resident of Phulpingkatti-6 of Sidhupalchowk, was sent to district prison after she failed to deposit bail of Rs 750,000. She was caught with a bag containing 500 units of 100 Yuan denomination notes.
“It is not practical to confiscate Chinese currency from a trader in the border,” said Neelakantha Chulagain, president of Trans-Himalaya Trade Association. Different associations representing traders in Nepal-China trade have also supported the agitation.
