KATHMANDU, June 28: Nepali craftsmen have been producing handmade paper products for the last many decades. Since Nepali handmade paper -- also known as Lokta - is known for its beauty, durability and wonderful texture, products made from these papers have gained wide popularity in national and international market.



The involvement of many big and small handicraft companies in Nepali handmade paper industry is not only helping in the promotion of handmade paper products but also in improving the living standard of low-income families living in rural hinterlands. Thousands of families across the country are directly or indirectly involved in handmade paper industry. [break]



Shiva Subedi, managing director of Lokta Paper Craft in Ekantakuna, said the demand for Nepali handmade paper products is very high in the international market.



"Most of the Nepali handmade paper industries in the country depend on international markets to sale their products," Subedi said, adding, "There is also a growing demand for handmade paper products in the local market."



According to the statistics of Federation of Handicraft Associations of Nepal (FHAN), handmade paper product is the fifth largest exportable products in the handicraft category. Subedi´s firm Lokta Paper Craft, which has been in the business for the last two decades, has been directly employing more than 100 persons.



Writing papers, writing pads, greeting cards, visiting cards, gift wrappers, gift boxes, lamp shades, calendars, paper charts and wall papers are among the wide varieties of products that can be produced from Nepali paper. The price for these products ranges from Rs 30 to as much as Rs 3,000.



Lokta Paper Craft is the first handicraft industry to start production of handmade paper notebook and album in Nepal, said Subedi. He also said the demand for notebook, album, paper bag and decorative items among others are high in national and international market.



"We get a good number of international visitors in our showroom during peak tourist season between October and December. We do brisk business during important occasions like Christmas," Subedi added. He further informed that store had been welcoming a good number of foreign diplomats and expatriates.



Apart from handmade paper products, Lokta Paper Crafts has also been dealing with other handicraft products like thankas, pashmina, wood crafts and felt products among others.
