Progress in peace process within few days: PM

KATHMANDU, Oct 11: Prime Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai claimed on Tuesday that there would be a tangible progress in the peace process within a few days.



Speaking at a tea-party organized by Reporters´ Club in the capital, Bhattarai said talks among major political parties are moving ahead in a positive direction. Also, top leaders from other political parties repeated the same rhetoric.[break]



“Talks among the parties are moving in a positive direction. It will bear fruits very soon,” the prime minister told the reporters.



Asked how he had evaluated the government´s performance over the last 45 days, Bhattarai said it is the people who should judge the government. He also claimed that the government would be transformed into a national consensus government in the days to come.



Speaking at the same function, Constituent Assembly Chairman Subas Nembang said the there would be no progress in constitution writing until there is tangible progress in the peace process.



However, Nembang expressed confidence that the peace process would be concluded in the next couple of days. “This time, I have found the top leaders of major political parties very serious. I hope they will give momentum to the peace process,” stated Nembang.



President of Nepali Congress (NC) Sushil Koirala said there will be progress in the twin task of peace process and constitution writing if the Maoist translated its commitments into action.



Similarly, CPN-UML Chairman Jhalanath Khanal said the peace process can be concluded on time only if the major parties work seriously.

“If three major political parties work seriously the twin tasks of peace process and constitution writing can be concluded by November 30,” he added.



Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Bijay Kumar Gachchhadar also repeated the same rhetoric.



“There can be drastic changes in Nepali politics within 24 hours. So, why not in a couple of days?” questioned Gachchhadar who is also the chairman of the Madhesi People´s Rights Forum-Democratic.
