DRI on Friday had raided five private firms - two legal, two engineering and a chartered accountancy firm -- on suspicion of tax evasion.
“After studying the documents seized by DRI team, we found that the firms have either not disclosed their actual transactions or have recorded negligible income in an apparent bid to evade VAT and income tax,” an official involved in the investigation told Republica on Sunday. [break]
Legal Advisors´ Forum at Putalisadak promoted by senior advocate Shambhu Thapa, Janachetana Law Firm at Dillibazaar owned by advocate Uddav Kumar KC and Bhim Engineering Consultancy at New Road run by engineer Mahesh Kumar Singh were raided by the DRI team.
Similarly, the team also raided Design Sales Engineering Company at Naxal, which is promoted by Arun Dev Pant and BK Agrawal & Company, an accounting consulting firm registered in the name of BK Agrawal.
Khum Raj Punjali, director general of DRI said proprietors of all five firms have been ordered to appear before DRI by Tuesday to furnish their clarification.
“We have also instructed the firms to send their concerned staff to assist investigation officials to extract data and other contents from their computers. We expect a clearer picture once we complete studying computer and paper documents,” Punjali added.
As per existing laws, service firms with annual transactions of over Rs 1 million have to register under VAT and pay annual income tax and submit financial statements to DRI regularly.
Of the firms raided, Janachetana Law Firm has not registered for VAT. Similarly, DRI has directed Dr Asharphi Sah to appear before DRI with clarifications within three days.
