Probe into Hotel Bishal police 'thrashing' begins

LAHAN, July 13: A probe team, formed earlier to investigate alleged thrashing by police of the hotel owner and guests at Bishal Hotel in Lahan, has initiated works, on Friday.



The three-member team led by Krishna Hari Puskar, a joint-secretary at the home ministry, started works after coming to Lahan today. The other two members of the team include SSP Govinda Niraula, chief of Sagarmatha Zonal Police Office, and the assistant chief district officer (CDO) of Siraha. [break]



Sources said team coordinator Pushkar recorded SSP Niraula’s statement as well, as two police personnel under his command were also said to be involved in the incident. The team is separately meeting local business entrepreneurs, journalists and civil society members in Lahan as part of the investigation.



On July 4, plainclothes policemen had entered the hotel they said searching for criminals and had thrashed and arrested Sunil Kumar Sah, the hotel proprietor, Bishal Kumar Sah, Siraha district chairman of Builders´ Association and Nirash Chaudhari, former Siraha chapter president of FNCCI.



The trio, however, were released later following pressure from local businessmen.
