Price of off-season vegetables soars

KATHMANDU, March 23: Price of off-season vegetables has increased significantly in the wholesale market compared to price recorded couple of weeks ago.

According to Kalimati Fruits and Vegetable Market Development Board, price of off-season vegetables like tomato, carrot, cauliflower, radish, brinjal, bitter gourd, pumpkin and mushroom, among others, have witnessed significant rise in their price. "Prices have shot up following decline in prices of these vegetables," Ramesh Dangol, planning officer of the board, told Republica. "Daily supply has dropped by around 50 tons these days."


Price of tomato, mushroom and bitter gourd has increased notably over the period. While tomato has become dearer by Rs 37 per kg to Rs 55, price of mushroom has gone up by Rs 50 per kg to Rs 143. Similarly, price of bitter gourd has increased by Rs 29 per kg over the period to Rs 97.

Likewise, price of cauliflower and radish has increased by Rs 7 per kg and Rs 12 per kg, respectively, to Rs 14 and Rs 43 respectively. Similarly, carrot and pumpkin have become dearer by Rs 13 per kg and Rs 4 per kg to Rs 36 and Rs 31, respectively.

Dangol, however, said price would start falling soon as harvesting season of different seasonal vegetables is about to begin.
