KATHMANDU, Aug 12: President Bidya Bhandari has stressed empowering state mechanisms for the implementation of the new constitution in the country.

Addressing an International Conference on Constitution of Nepal in the capital on Saturday, Bhandari said that state mechanisms should also be made capable to achieve the goal and objectives laid out by the constitution. Bhandari was of the view that the 'unique' constitution of Nepal is committed to upholding the rights of all citizens.

South Asia Trust and Kathmandu University School of Law (KUSL) jointly convened the conference. Former President Ram Baran Yadav suggested to the stakeholders to focus on the implementation of the constitution.

Chairman of the-then Constituent Assembly and ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) leader Subas Nembang said that Nepal has no alternate to implementing the constitution despite dissatisfaction from some sections of people. Recalling the constitution drafting moments, Nembang also claimed that suggestions were taken from nomad Raute community to Supreme Court of Nepal for the constitution drafted by the people in Nepal's history.

Main opposition Nepali Congress (NC) leader Ram Saran Mahat said that powers and authorities given to local units through the constitution has no parallel in the world, as authorities given to local level is more important than federal set up in Nepal.

Convener of the conference, KUSL Dean Bipin Adhikari said that the life of a country's constitution depends on its implementation. The three-day conference will discuss various aspects of the constitution, according to the organizer. Prime Minister K P Oli is scheduled to address the concluding ceremony on Monday.
