“A CJ-led government would weaken the judiciary and this is what the Maoist leaders want,” Pokharel told media persons at Biratnagar airport on Saturday. “Therefore, forming an election government under the leadership of the president is a better alternative.”[break]
He said that since the president is the protector of the constitution, it is the head of state´s duty and responsibility to give a solution to the current crisis. Pokharel argued that Maoists want to weaken the judiciary because the Supreme Court and the Nepal Army are the major obstacles in their plan to capture state powers by force.
“It would be a mockery of democracy to appoint the chief justice as the prime minister,” he said.
Pokharel came down heavily on Nepali Congress and UML leaders for failing to understand “Maoists´ plan”. He claimed that the Maoist leaders want to secure favor of the apex court and the national army to serve their ulterior interests.
While taking a decision on forming CJ-led government, the CPN-UML leaders were sharply divided. Former Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal, General Secretary Ishwar Pokharel, two secretaries Shankar Pokharel and Yubaraj Gyawal and Constituent Assembly (CA) Chairman Subas Nembang are some of the key leaders in the UML who objected to the proposal to form CJ-led government. The party´s chairman Jhalanath Khanal and other leaders, including KP Sharma Oli, Bamdev Gautam, Bidya Bhandari and Bishnu Paudel, among others, have stood in favor of the proposal.
