Dr. Yadav, who is also the supreme commander of the Nepal Army, said he had asked General Katawal to continue in office as the government decision to sack him wasn’t supported by the ruling coalition partners and wasn’t done through a political consensus.
In his two-page statement, the president has also appealed to all the people to extend support to the government, its organs and security agencies to maintain national unity, peace and order.
He said Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal had agreed with him to seek support of all political parties before initiating action against the army chief. “…and he had also said he would consult with me before taking any decision in this regard,” said the President.
In the statement issued just before PM Dahal’s address to the nation announcing his resignation, the president has argued that the government action to sack the army chief was sure to invite more problems as the task of army integration hadn’t even started, there was limited time to get the new constitution written and the peace process hadn’t reached its logical conclusion.
