Prez appeals to leaders for consensus

KATHMANDU, May 27: President Dr Ram Baran Yadav, who met top leaders of the three major political parties together on Thursday, has asked the leaders to sort out their differences, reach an agreement and extend the term of the Constituent Assembly for the sake of national sovereignty.



"He was so emotional to ask us to sort out our differences and arrived at a consensus in the larger interest of 30 million people and national sovereignty," Acting President of Nepali Congress Sushil Koirala said about the president´s meeting with him, Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and CPN-UML Chairman Jhalanath Khanal. The president called the meeting of the three leaders as uncertainty continued over the fate of the Constituent Assembly and the parties were still sorting out their differences.



"The president pleaded with the leaders on behalf of 30 million people to reach a consensus," a source at the president´s office quoted the president as saying to the leaders.

"He expressed his concern emotionally," Koirala said after the meeting.



According to Khanal, the president expressed his concern and the leaders put forward their views. "We told him that we are trying to forge a consensus," he added.



Dahal refused to talked to media about the meeting.
