At an interaction with the Nepal Press Union here, Council Chairperson Borna Bahadur Karki spoke of the need of modification in the code of conduct and added the revision was being held to change it so as to suit the need of contemporary time.
"The Council has not been able to fulfill the role of guardian fully in the journalism sector," Karki said adding, "The media houses have not been able to view us as their guardian. If they point out our mistakes, we will have an opportunity to become more accountable."
He said those aspiring to join journalism would be subjected to examination on basis of certain criteria and pledged to create a media museum. He added that the Council was preparing to enhance the capability of the journalists through training courses.
At the programme, Press Union senior Vice Chairman Deepak Acharya, General Secretary Ajaya Babu Shiwakoti, Deputy General Secretary Bhisma Raj Ojha, Treasurer Saroj Adhikari among others stressed the need on part of the Council to develop code of conduct and monitor its enforcement. In view of the possibility of the country adopting federal state structure, they also suggested for creating Federal Council at the centre and Provincial Councils at the provinces.
Council member Sudarshan Acharya and Chief Administrative Official Jhabindra Bhusal underlined the complaints pouring in from the National News Agency (RSS) and some online news portals related to plagiarism.
