Speaking to the media after voting in the election for the post of President at the Parliament House in Naya Baneshwor, Thapa said that the newly-elected President should separate himself from the party and fulfill his role with heart, word and deed. He said that if the president cannot separate from the party, the presidency itself will be in trouble.

"Ramchandra Paudel, who has been struggling for democracy for a long time, is almost certain to be elected as president today," he said, "He is aware of the weaknesses of the previous president. That is why he should separate himself from the party in all his mind, words and deeds.”
