KATHMANDU, March 15: Attorney General Mukti Pradhan tendered resignation from his post to Chairman of the Interim Election Council of Ministers Khil Raj Regmi, on Friday.

"I have resigned from my post to cooperate with the election government in the changed context," said Pradhan. He had been appointed as attorney general in September 9, 2011 on the recommendation of the former prime minister Baburam Bhattarai in accordance with Article 134 (1) of the Interim Constitution of Nepal, 2007. During his tenure, Pradhan was dragged into controversy after he allegedly issued directive for halting the prosecution of the Maoist cadres implicated in the 2004 murder of Dailekh-based journalist Dekendra Thapa. By constitution, attorney general is the chief public prosecutor and chief legal advisor to the Nepal government.
