KATHMANDU, July 1: The possibility of a new member coming to the post of Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives (HoR) is declining. In the meeting of the HoR, there is a seat for the Deputy Speaker. Ministers sit in that seat as there is no deputy speaker in the HoR.

The Office of the Deputy Speaker in the Parliament Secretariat is gathering dust. In the past, the KP Oli-led government was not interested in the post of Deputy Speaker, which has been vacant since January 26, 2020. The current government has also shown no interest in the position.

The post has been vacant for about 29 months due to the government’s apathy. According to the provisions of the constitution, different political parties have to be given the posts of speaker and deputy speaker. In each session, the Speaker selects 10 persons to chair the sitting of parliament.

This has not hampered the functioning of parliament without the Deputy Speaker. There are less than six months left until the end of the term of the federal parliament members.

A few days ago, in the House of Representatives meeting, ruling party MP Amrita Thapa had demanded early election to the posts of Deputy Speaker of the HoR and Vice-Chairperson of the National Assembly.
