BAGLUNG, Oct 7: The poor condition of the road was the main reason behind the fatal Jeep accident Tuesday in Myagdi in which 14 pilgrims were killed, police have concluded.

“It seems the vehicle met with an accident while trying to let the sheep and mountain goats coming from opposite direction pass through the steep and narrow rural road,” said Police Inspector Mahendra BK after visiting the accident site. [break]

The steep road, which runs through dizzying heights, is constructed by the Nepal Army (NA) at the cost of Rs 560 million.

The road, which was closed for the last three months due to heavy rainfall and subsequent landslides, had been opened just a week ago after a surge in Hindu pilgrims visiting Muktinath Temple in Mustang.

The road is the only link between Mustang and other districts of Nepal. As per the agreement, the army opened the track road three years ago, but has not improved its quality due to lack of budget.

Obliged to pay Rs 6.4 million for the Monday´s accident, Lumbini General Insurance, the only company involved in transport insurance here, has decided not to ensure new vehicles and passengers and renew insurance contracts.
