KATHMANDU, June 11: The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Nepal, (OHCHR-N) has expressed concern about growing number of violence and threats by activists of political parties and their sister wings in recent months and urged them to refrain from such activities.

The UN human rights body warned that such violence and threats could “threaten” the ongoing peace process.

“I appeal to all leaders to ensure that their members refrain from violence and threatening speeches, and respect the commitments made in the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, including to respect human rights,” said OHCHR-Nepal Representative Richard Bennett in a statement.

The OHCHR-N´s statement has come amidst growing incidents of bandas, clashes between cadres of political parties and politically motivated threats after the Maoist-led government stepped down on May 4.

The UN human rights body said all parties should advocate respect for rule of law. "This includes cooperating with the Nepal Police to ensure that full investigations are carried out promptly and that those responsible are held accountable, rather than threatening or engaging in retaliation,” it added.
