KATHMANDU, Aug 21: The Policy Research Institute under the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers has stepped up efforts to make Nepal’s public policymaking process more evidence-based and grounded in research.
According to the institute’s fortnightly progress report for August 1–15 submitted to the Prime Minister’s Office, eight reports have been sent for expert and internal review.
The reports on Gender Issues and Domestic Violence; Offences and Punishment in School Curricula; and Enhancing Teachers’ Capacity and Strengthening Management Systems for Improving the Quality of School Education in Nepal: A Strategic Study have been sent to the institute’s Publication Review and Recommendation Committee for internal review. A report on Determining the Basis for Identifying Marginalised Groups has been sent for expert review.

Similarly, reports on the basis for identifying disadvantaged Khas-Arya groups, a review of the National Housing Policy 2068, integration of the social security system, foreign direct investment commitments and their implementation in Nepal, and reintegration of returnee migrants through the utilisation of capital, knowledge and skills are undergoing both internal and expert review.
The institute also published two reports online during the period—Effectiveness of Public Expenditure Management and Culture of Knowledge Transfer in the Civil Service—to help address information gaps caused by frequent transfers and changes in responsibilities within the bureaucracy.
Three other reports are in the final layout stage, the Prime Minister’s Office said.
The institute has also expanded its work beyond research and publication to policy dialogue and planning. It recently held a public policy dialogue with stakeholders on updating the two-decade-old National Drug Control Policy 2063 in line with current international human rights and health standards.
Its Development Committee has also approved the annual budget allocation and programme action plan for fiscal year 2083/84.
