KATHMANDU, June 11: Police have opened fire on  gangster Ashok Lama.

Lama has received a bullet in his leg. The injured has been undergoing treatment at Bir Hospital. 

"Police had to open fire on gangster Lama after he went at the police while efforts were being made to capture him at the UN Park, Lalitpur, " informed Narendra Prasad Upreti, spokesperson of Metropolitcan Police Crime Division (MPCD), Teku.

Murder-accused Lama was at large. He has been charged under public offense case.

The MPCD has launched a 15-day campaign in order to crackdown on thefts, fugitives and hooliganism.

Lama had been extorting money from land plotters, crusher plants and contractors in Lalitpur area.

Ahok, 38, is associated with the group led by gangster Dawa Lama.

Police have seized a weapon from his possession.
