KATHMANDU, May 19: Preliminary investigations into the murder of police constable Yubraj Ghimire, conducted by the District Police Range in Kathmandu, suggests a link between the incident, drug use, and eve teasing. It was determined that individuals who use drugs were involved in the murder, with the reason identified as eve teasing.

Traffic police constable Yubraj Ghimire was discovered dead in a gruesome state on the ground floor of an under-construction building in Tarakeswar Municipality-9, Manamaiju, on Friday. Originally from Khotang, constable Ghimire was assigned to the Traffic Police Division at Durbar Marg and was living in Samakhusi.

After completing his duty on Thursday, traffic police constable Yubraj Ghimire did not return home and was subsequently found murdered on Friday. Following the discovery of his body, both the District Police Range in Kathmandu and the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police launched a detailed investigation into the incident. During the course of their investigation, a total of 21 people were detained for questioning. Out of these, seven individuals, including a minor, were formally arrested after being linked to the murder.

During an initial investigation into the murder, the police have identified and arrested seven individuals who have confessed to their involvement in the crime. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Basant Rajaure announced these arrests at a press conference held by the District Police Range on Sunday. The individuals taken into custody include Sachin Pariyar, 21, from Changunarayan Municipality-1, Bhaktapur; Anjali Shrestha, 18, from Nuwakot Dupchechaur Rural Municipality; Bipana, 21, from Andhikhola Rural Municipality, Syangja; Basundhara Karki, known as Basanti; Nunmaya Karki, 56, from the same place; Buddha, 21, from Nuwakot Tani Rural Municipality; Lama Tamang, and 30-year-old Amrit Tamang, known as Dorje, from Sindhupalchok Indrawati Rural Municipality-1, along with a 13-year-old minor. Further investigations are ongoing, police said.

All involved found to be drug users

According to SSP Rajaure, all the individuals arrested in connection with the murder of Ghimire are known drug users. The investigation has also raised suspicions that constable Ghimire himself might have been involved with drugs.

SSP Rajaure noted that the events leading to Ghimire's murder began with Sachin, a known acquaintance of Ghimire. On the day of the incident, after finishing his duties, Ghimire went to a hotel for lunch where Sachin and Anjali Shrestha, who were in a relationship and living together, were also present. During this encounter, Ghimire allegedly teased Anjali, which angered Sachin.

Following this confrontation, Sachin requested Ghimire to transport a sick Anjali to Harichaur on his bike. According to SSP Rajaure, the three traveled together to the location, which was known to be a shelter for drug users. Upon arrival, others were already present, and it is alleged that together, they attacked Ghimire, beating him to death with bricks, rods, and knuckles.

The investigation continues to uncover further details of the case and the precise motives behind the brutal attack.

Arrested by aerial fire

During the investigation into the murder of Ghimire, evidence led to Sachin's group, according to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Basant Rajaure.

As the police launched a search for them, it was discovered that the group frequently congregated and engaged in various criminal activities.

The group was eventually located behind Asta Narayan Hall and near the Baisdhara forest. When they attempted to flee the area, police officers were compelled to fire shots into the air to prevent their escape and facilitate their arrest.
