Police conclude Tinkune violence probe, set to charge 61 individuals for arson, looting

Police are preparing to submit the investigation report on the looting and arson during a rally organized by pro-monarchy groups in Tinkune to the District Government Attorney’s Office (DGAO) in Kathmandu.

KATHMANDU, May 23: Police are preparing to submit the investigation report on the looting and arson during a rally organized by pro-monarchy groups in Tinkune to the District Government Attorney’s Office (DGAO) in Kathmandu.


According to Spokesperson at Kathmandu Police Range Superintendent of Police (SP) Apil Bohora, the investigation into the arson, vandalism and looting during the protest is nearly complete and is now in its final phase.


SP Bohora said, “The investigation is complete, and the police are preparing to submit the investigation report to the DGAO by this evening to finalize it. Preparations are underway to make 61 people defendants in the incident.”

Police have stated that the accused will face four charges: criminal offense of public unrest, crimes against the state, organized crime and attempted and actual homicide.


According to the police, those arrested will be charged under the offenses of criminal mischief, crimes against the state, organized crime, attempted murder and murder.


Kathmandu District Police Office has been investigating the incident since March 28. So far, more than 170 individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident. Among them, 53 suspects remain in police custody.


Pro-monarchy groups are preparing for another protest on May 29, following their previous demonstration on March 28. Although it was announced as a peaceful protest, the movement turned violent. The government has prioritized investigating the violent protest held by pro-monarchy demonstrators at Tinkune, Kathmandu, on March 28.


The ruling and opposition parties have expressed contrasting views regarding the nature and intent of that protest. Ruling party lawmakers have stated that those responsible for the Tinkune incident must be brought to justice.
