In a press meet organized at Hanuman Dhoka to publicize a report of the past three fiscal years, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Devendra Subedi, the Head of Crime Division said efforts to curb crime was a huge success. [break]
He said, “We are able to investigate and solve serious cases of murder, smuggling of arms and fake currencies, kidnapping and rapid increase in cyber crimes effectively in recent fiscal years.”
According to the crime division´s report, most crimes are money related fueled by growth in commercialization of crime in recent years. “According to the crime trends in past three fiscal years, Kathmandu valley has appeared as a safe haven for organized and financial crimes,” SSP Subedi said.
In comparative study of crime in last three fiscal year - ´crimes against life´ had decreased to 191cases in the fiscal year 2011/012 from 365 cases in 2010/011 and 181 cases in fiscal year 2009/010. Financial crimes had decreased to 365 cases in the fiscal year 2011/012 from 400 cases in 2010/011 and 284 cases in fiscal year 2009/010. Whereas ´crime against property´ had increased to 380 cases in the fiscal year 2011/012 from 305 cases in 2010/011 and 369 cases in fiscal year 2009/010.
Organized crimes like drugs, extortion, illegal weapon, kidnapping, fake Currency, human trafficking, and human organ transplant have decreased to 322 in last fiscal year to 345 cases in 2010/011. Under cyber crimes, social network based crime have increasing dramatically in the recent years.
According to the report, police seized dozens of illegal weapons and Indian fake currencies of worth around Rs 100 million mostly from airport. Under "Papa Sera" operation to curve pick-picketers from various places in Kathmandu valley, police have arrested 22 people.
