Police arrest robbery-accused Tamang to complete round up on notorious robber group

KATHMANDU, June 7: Police arrested two members of a notorious burglar group on Friday, completing the round-up on the gang accused of robbing a jewelry shop and several financial institutions in the capital in the past few months.

KATHMANDU, June 7: Police arrested two members of a notorious burglar group on Friday, completing the round-up on the gang accused of robbing a jewelry shop and several financial institutions in the capital in the past few months.  


A team of officials from the Metropolitan Police Crime Division (MPCD) arrested Chhiring Tamang aka Kaka, 39, of Maijogmai Rural Municipality-6, Ilam, and Yogen Tamang, 25, of Beltar Municipality-4, of Udayapur on Friday from separate locations in the capital to complete the arrest of all the members of the six-member group. 


A team of officials from the division had to shoot at robbery-accused Kaka after he reportedly aimed his gun at the team which confronted him at Gokarneshwar Municipality-8, Makalbari, at around 3:10 pm on Friday.

The MPCD has claimed to have seized a gun loaded with six bullets from the robbery-accused. “He is currently receiving medical treatment at the Trauma Center,” Superintendent of Police (SP) Kedar Dhakal at the MPCD said, “The other arrestee is currently being interrogated at the division office.”


In the last few months, the burglar group reportedly broke into five institutions in the capital and looted the money. The group has been accused of robbing at least Rs 700,000 through five loots. Their targets included a jewelry shop and four financial institutions. In all the incidents, the gang shut down institutions after entering them and used weapons to scare the workers into handing in all the money. 


The MPCD had previously arrested Bhimraj Theeng aka Jigri, 30, of Sikharpur Rural Municipality-8, of Makwanpur, Rupesh Chaulagain aka Bahun, 23, of Chauri Deurali Rural Municipality-3, of Kavre, and Ajay Tamang aka Mundre, 23, of Chandranigahapur Municipality-2, from separate locations in the capital while Nitesh Tamang aka Dharane, 24, of Maijogmai Rural Municipality-6 was arrested in Ilam. 


According to the MPCD, the arrestees have already confessed to their involvement in the crimes. Officials from the MPCD have said that all the four previously arrested members have accepted their involvement in the extortion of money. The group will face a jail term of up to 14 years for the robberies and up to 10 years in jail for attempted murder in addition to a fine of Rs 240,000 each.
