Police, army deserters abandon protest after assurance (Updated)

KATHMANDU, Feb 8: Deserters of government security forces have left Thapathali area in the capital Sunday night after senior police officers assured them that Home Minister Bam Dev Gautan would meet them on Monday, according to our correspondent Yuvraj Acharya.

Earlier, situation at Thapathali area iwas tense around 10.30 p.m. Sunday as about 200 hundred deserters from Nepal Police, Armed Police Force and Nepal Army refused to leave the place.



The deserters had tried to march toward ministerial quarters at Pulchowk at about 10.30 p.m. Sunday, Avenue TV reported. They were prevented from crossing the Thapathali bridge by policemen stationed there.



These deserters are demanding reinstatement into the service, saying they were compelled to quit their jobs under pressure from then Maoist guerrillas during 1996-2006 insurgency. [break]



The area near the bridge engulfed with smoke as the deserters carried burning tires of bicycles and motorbikes. The protestors also carried banners with their slogans and demands.



Some other TV channels said that the some of the protestors have still not left the scene and are shouting slogans.



Some of these protestors were arrested earlier in the afternoon near the District Administration Office, Kathmandu. They were later released in the evening.
